Shoreditch to Stockholm

In Uncategorized on June 17, 2013 at 10:46 am

I have long admired the work of Freida Gormley at House of Hackney so it was a pleasure to meet her at the opening of the flagship store on Shoreditch High Street where the unusual fabrics, wallpapers and clothes are now all on show under one roof. At the front of the store is a flower shop where the displays picks up and highlight the colours of the fabrics on show inside.

Leaving the cool, grey overcast weather of London behind I headed to Stockholm with photographer Darren Chung to shoot the home of the couple behind the American lifestyle company Lexington ( yes, I know, American lifestyle, Swedish company!)

We had a sun filled day with Kristina and Tommy and the house was a dream to shoot because , in true Swedish style, it was light and airy with crisp white walls.

Then back to London for Friday’s shoot with Alexander James at the apartment of Tarja Visan, the Danish ex-model who is the dynamic woman behind the Buddha bar company, we were shooting for an autumn issue so lit the fire and pulled the curtains to make moodier, cosier room shots, as a result we were sweltering but we had an interesting time and have lots of tales to tell in the copy, when I sit down to write it next week.

How others do it

In Uncategorized on June 8, 2013 at 3:32 pm

Since I took up blogging  I’ve browsed quite a few other sites to see how the rest of you are doing it and to pick up hints and ideas. Some blog sites are directly linked to my work, so it’s really voyeurism to read them, but then there are others that I look at just for fun.

One of the fun ones is freshfromthefield.blogspot.co.uk although I’m not an avid bird watcher or wildlife expert I do find the blue and coal tits on the bird feeder outside my window a great distraction from work.

Fresh from the field is the blog of Peter Thompson of the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust and is dotted with his great wild life photographs.

As I have published a few books in the last fifteen years I am also interested in how ‘new’ technology is affecting the market, so when I became aware of the Kindle edition (available on Amazon) of a new cookery book called “Hey Dad, How do you cook…? by book designer and proprietor of Mousemat Design Ltd., Ian Hughes I had to have a go.

I love the interactive element of the book on the tablet format and also liked the chatty fatherly advice, and wine tips which give the pages a really personal feel.

Sunshine and signs

In Uncategorized on June 3, 2013 at 3:18 pm

A sunny start to the week with a breakfast meeting at  The Modern Pantry in Clerkenwell with Habitat’s Creative Director Polly Dickens. The company is launching an exhibition focused on contemporary African design during this year’s London Design Festival and a show called ‘Graphic Africa’  to open in September at their Platform exhibition space in the Kings Road shop. It was such a wonderfully sunny morning that we sat outside to drink coffee and ‘talk shop’

The sun has also been responsible for the most wonderful display of flowers, even in central London a house can get lost behind a shower of Wisteria – these outbursts of blossom make walking to appointments and shoots a pleasure instead of  a drudge.

and is this a sign of our times… we spotted this outside a lift to a multi storey car park in Malmo, can anyone explain?
