I hit the road running on Wednesday with a visit to “The tunnel of Doom and Gloom” at 100% Design, Earl’s Court. The blackened entrance was lined with health and safety people in fluorescent jackets to stop visitors becoming disorientated and falling through the fabric walls. A strange way to welcome people to the brightest and best in design I thought.
Thursday to Tent at the Truman Brewery in Brick Lane an expanding and inspiring show where I fell in love with a cabinet made from dominoes
Then on to Designers Block at the South Bank, I found this a confusing venue with what seemed to be a student show at street level and a few products in the main shop, maybe I missed something? That evening I put on my best flatties and headed to a bit of a do at the V&A, it was really an excuse to get a good look at the Thomas Heatherwick exhibition ( or Heathwick as my image seems to show)
There was a miniature of the amazing Olympic torch and a full size replica of the back of the new London bus plus plenty of other interesting models and maquettes. But among all the future designs and predictions of the week I was delighted to see that Soda stream is making a come back, seeing it again revived happy childhood memories of pressing levers and making bubbles rise, and although it doesn’t yet make champagne it is a useful way of putting a little fizz in to every day life.
