Moomin adventure

So off to Helsinki thanks to the wonderful people at Visit Finland . We had a smooth flight and arrived with tripods and lights, but with the almost 3 hour flight and 2 hour time difference we arrived in the evening, even though we left home in the morning. Helsinki is a fascinating blend of brutal Baltic 1950s style and Art Deco architecture. We stayed overnight at the  Sokos Vaakuna and the roof top restaurant

The Russian cathedral in Helsinki on a rainy evening

is like an ocean going liner, clad in wooden panels and fabulous etched glass and brass fittings. The entrance hall is also spectacular  with a circular foyer with high back chairs

I also had a quick peek in the stately central railway station

Rush hour at Helsinki station

and the next day was sunny and perfect for photographing Tove Jansson’s home. We interviewed her niece Sophia and got to know a lot more about the Moomins – but you’ll have to wait until the feature comes out in mid November
